Attention Internet Explorer Users!

[July18, 2010] "Anti-virus researchers have discovered a new strain of malicious software that spreads via USB drives and takes advantage of a previously unknown vulnerability in the way Microsoft Windows handles '.lnk' or shortcut files. Microsoft has acknowledged the vulnerability that the new malware Stuxnet uses to launch itself with .lnk files, but said it has no plans to patch the flaw right now. The company said the flaw affects most current versions of Windows, including Vista, Server 2008 and Windows 7 32- and 64-bit."

Today, web browsers such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Apple Safari (to name a few), are installed on almost all computers. Because web browsers are used so frequently, it is vital to configure them securely. Often, the web browser that comes with an operating system is not set up in a secure default configuration. Not securing your web browser can lead quickly to a variety of computer problems caused by anything from spyware being installed without your knowledge to intruders taking control of your computer.

This site, from Carnegie Mellon University, will show you the steps for securing your browser.

The latest version of Internet Explorer doesn't always display this site correctly, there should be a menu on the left side of the page. I tried to get the site to render correctly, but finally gave up. Sorry. Who knows, maybe some day the next version will be more secure and render sites correctly.

As IE is the only browser not displaying the code correctly, I would suggest that you use a browser that is easier to use, more secure and adheres to web browser standards as put forth by World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

Here's a link of a rating system for browers.

My suggestion? Firefox (for all platforms) or Chrome. I'd give Firefox a try, it's a great browser, more secure and adheres to web browser standards.
